Dear Benjamin,

Do you care about global warming? Do you agree on everything that people say, mainly your parents? If so, then it is my job to prove you wrong about global warming. Regardless of what you are being told, it is important that you know the scientific reasoning on why global warming is occurring before you take a stand. I’m not saying that your parent’s views are wrong, but that it is supported by other ideas with insufficient evidence. Maybe they weren’t exposed to the scientific explanation that state how we caused the increase of carbon levels, and as a result
we create global warming. Whatever the reason, this is your chance to broaden their understanding of global factors.
Ice-core scientists have proven that “carbon dioxide levels are in step…a central role…
an amplifier” (Maslin 60). Right here it shows how carbon dioxide is considered the main factor of global warming. This information has been gathered through Professor Shackleton’s research. His data shows that carbon levels have increased more than usual, and this can be supported by satellite data as well. At first, satellites gave inaccurate data but after adjustments they can trace back to the last 1,000 years. “Evidence suggests that natural climate forcings have been similar…this leaves one alternative- that greenhouse gases, with their known radioactive forcing, have already influenced global climate” (Maslin 65). Satellite data clearly proves that it is not nature, but our involvement with industrial manufacture. With the creation of industries, greenhouse gases and radioactive decay have polluted the planet. The increase in greenhouse gases has assisted global warming from spreading around the world. If this continues the planet we live in will no longer exist since the majority of below sea level countries are going to be under water, including Manhattan.
It is important to know that your position is supported by valid evidence. People, like Dr. Tim Ball, can easily say that global warming is a natural thing. However, arguments should have sufficient data that is well accepted by scientists. Dr. Ball stresses his view on global warming by stating that temperature has always been increasing even before man-made products were created. Unlike ice-core scientists, he does not provide evidence where this has been recorded. His claim has unfortunately been accepted by Canadians even though evidence saw not shown. Dr. Ball’s presentation is categorized as “junk science” since he does not say why he supports his position besides the fact of temperature. People do not know that oil companies, like the BC, are paying millions of dollars to silence the fact that they are causing an increase of greenhouse gases. Their purpose is to clear their path from obstacles that can prevent them from getting customers. So if you chose to take a stand, let your parents give you scientific data that proves the earth is causing global warming.
