Peak Oil Survival and The Skill of Ecological Perception

What people decide to do in response to economic failure always results in negative global impact. The essential idea that people have when finding solutions for any economic problem is beneficial to society. These “solutions” that the government and other people come up with are the problem. Humanity does not understand that no matter what we do, we add on to the earth’s destruction. This destruction can be easily seen through Aric McBay’s book “Peak Oil Survival: Preparation for Life after Gridcrash”. The author portrays to society that in our effort to fix one problem another one is created. According to McBay, oil consumption has led the world to oil depletion. This is seen as the most impactful resource that any nation must deal with. With people buying cars, oil percentages have decreased in the world and as a result of oil usage greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. The countries that are aware of global warming and its progress on the planet have tried to create new ways to deal with fossil fuel emissions in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, when these engineers created the hybrid car they did not realize that it would consume more energy than a regular SUV car. With a hybrid car fossil fuel consumption and exposure to the air would decrease but at the same time still increase global warming. Yes, hybrid cars lower fossil fuel exposure but it consumes more electrical energy and requires specialized and well educated engineers. This is just one example among others that McBay uses to show humanity that it is pointless to find solutions to any problem.
Meanwhile Aric McBay explains to society that the effort people put in to fix a problem is not exactly a solution, Laura Sewall talks about love and earth compassion. She believes that because love triumphs all people will willingly stop ignoring the planet and think of ways to help prevent the issue of global warming. This belief has been used as a way to show how people can change their view in social affairs. People with honor and experience with natural disasters can take the initiative to help the planet from continuous global heating. This aspect Laura portrays is that humanity can change what they do to the planet. These two aspects of literature can help people think and become aware of their surroundings.

Whiteness and World Without Humans

Monica August 3, 2009
Writing Seminar I

The issue of global warming has expanded and as a result experts have had conversations about it and written about the impact of our existence. In “The Deconstruction of Whiteness” and in The World without Us personification of buildings and the earth is expressed. In the conversation between Anthony and Carl, Anthony says “wanting to hear the voice of the earth, the notion that nature is crying out in pain…” (Anthony 265) Through his use of personification he shows us how the planet is being affected by our existence. We have created several corporations where the earth has made the earth feel pain of our lifestyle and from our consumption of toxic products. Similarly, the essay “The City without Us” states “Buildings groan as their innards expand and contract; joints between walls and rooflines separate.” This essay shows us that our existence has helped deteriorate the buildings in cities. This is according to our malfunction of not keeping water out of below ground areas. When water passes through the cement cracks form and a pathway for future water appears. These two works of literature help us understand the bad conduct we have with nature.
When we ignore nature we ignore the mishaps that we cause to our own creations. When the earth feels pain we feel pain, in this case the fact of cracks in buildings where in the end buildings collapse. Although both sources talk about the issue of global warming one takes the path about a world without us. This piece of information states that if we did not exist then the destruction we have caused would stop, yet it will take the planet a long period of time to re-adjust itself. The second source which is a conversation between two people tells us that if we don’t let the issue of racism end then our planet will harvest more disasters. With racism come inequality and no understanding, thus leading to the decline and extinction of the earth.

"The Story of Stuff" and "Narcissism

Monica

We don’t usually think about where manufactured products cause shortages in resources. We as Americans only feel the necessity to have the feeling of satisfaction. In American society one is looked down upon if one does not contribute to consumption. In “The Story of Stuff” a systematic blue print is used to show the process before and after consumption. Also the narrator tells us that this layout doesn’t reveal the “dirt” behind the issue of consumption. In her opinion, which I agree on, we are robbed of our identity as people. In both the video and in “The All-Consuming Self” it talks about our identification as consumers. We are not seen as mothers, daughters, friends, etc, but as people who buy products. This identification we have imposed on ourselves is the result of commercial and ad exposure. Through commercials and ads we are told that everything about us is “wrong”, and that we should go out to buy products that will make us right and “full”. According to Allen Kanner and Mary Gomes this feeling or “syndrome” is considered as narcissism.
You might think that narcissism refers to people who love them selves, but it also has
another meaning. It is a psychological idea that we have which tells us we are void inside. Void in a sense that we are not up to date in technological advances. Through us it is a feeling to strive for materialistic objects that we don’t have. Narcissistic people tend to work in order to have that satisfying feeling that holds their “false image”. The false image we have implanted in our minds is the result of people’s words that tell us we are not like them. We feel a lack of belonging and in some sense of love as well. The consequence of our idea when working to gain materialistic objects is less leisure time we spend with our loved ones. The routines we imposed on ourselves is of work, television time (when time is granted), and sleep. As a result of narcissism is the fact that we New Yorkers shop for unnecessary products while contributing to the big picture that surrounds us. The issue of good consumption is a leading factor of what is now known as global warming.

Pittsburgh

Monica Cambi

Numerous buildings below the crescent moon shine lively in the morning even though some people are sleeping. This image reminds me of New York City “The City that Never Sleeps” and the issue of global warming. The lights that illuminate the dawn contribute to carbon level in the atmosphere since electricity is being overly used. Electrical companies function incessantly since cities such as New York and Pittsburgh constantly shine and burn through out the morning. The picture taken by Ryan Southern Photography bears evidence that the world is truly heating up. All around the world there are places like Tokyo where light burns and the heat from all the electricity makes the situation of global warming worse. Is it not enough that the earth is naturally warming up since it is reacting to our fossil fuels? The contribution of light/ electricity helps the planet by making it come closer to D-Day.

In Class Assignment

Population growth is an expediting influence in the world especially in the United States. According to Leon Kolonklewicz, former alumni of British Columbia and marine biologist, population growth has sky rocketed due to increase of fertility rates in the 1970’s.[1] As a peace corp. participant he visited Honduras environment. Here he saw that a classroom held 50-70 bookless children[2]. Reason being for bookless children is because too much children means too much books to buy. In an economic struggle survival prevails over education. Evidence of economic struggle due to population growth is in the United States. Before 1970 the birth rate was approximately 2.1 but from 1970 to the present it overflowed[3]. The United States is known for its technological advances to accommodate large families. With more children comes the creation of more manufactured products and less money for parents. However, the populations of people in the United States contribute to the consumption of cars and other manufactured products that increase carbon levels. Kolonklewicz states that population and immigration brings a rise in consumption of technology. When the United States government allowed people to migrate to the country its population was a million larger. He also states that the U.S.A has increased 90 percent in population from 1970 to present time[4]. His belief is that global warming deals with population growth.
Leon uses the equation I=PAT to show how population influences the planet[5]. This equation stands for population times affluence times technology equals to world impact. Simply put population is the reason why global warming is rapidly increasing. With population carbon levels raise as a positive correlation. He references to Albert Gore in “An Inconvenient Truth” to exemplify the fact of carbon level increase. Similarly Mark Maslin, author of “Global Warming: A Very Short Introduction”, showed charts where carbon levels were increasing due to carbon level[6]. Like Leon I also believe and support the fact that population is a contribution of global warming. It may be of carbon levels like scientists have shown, but it depends on the number of people who use these items daily that increases carbon level.

Race and Global Warming

Racial issue leads to Global Warming and the end of the world.

Scientists always give scientific explanations why global warming is rising, but they seem to always leave out the issue of race. You might think “What does race have to do with Global Warming?” it’s simple: everything. You might be skeptical about the connection between race and global change like I was. If not for my teachers insight then I would have never considered race as the leading cause in increase of carbon levels. Back in the late 1940’s veterans from WWII were returning and wanted to live the “American Dream”, but the issue of race was critical at this time. African Americans were prohibited from living in areas where Caucasian people were. The reason for not allowing African Americans to live where they pleased was because veterans were racist. As a way to resolve the issue of whites not living next to Africans people started moving towards the suburbs. The great movement of caucasians to the suburbs made architects plan out a new model for people. Soldiers that came back from war used the G.I. bill to move out.During the time period of 1940-1950 racism was having a drastic impact on both whites and African Americans. In this time schools were no longer segregated, but it did not mean that racism ended. I see integrated schools as an attempt to drive away African Americans. White children at schools were beating up black children since they did not seem them as equals. Back then African Americans that grouped together were not considered gangs but as a unity to fight against those who stoned them. It was around this era that a Civil Rights movement embarked in Los Angeles. People who were participants of this movement were targeted and mistreated by the police. The news of massacre was headlined every week in the newspaper “The Eagle” it was through this propaganda that others saw the horrific actions that African Americans were facing. As a way to escape from this issue white people left in millions to suburban areas. This great migration is known as the “White Flight”.The “White Flight” made the government create homes for new residents. The creation of new homes made architects plan models for newcomers. Although the models for towns were created, convenience stores were built far apart. Wholesale stores, supermarkets, and office parking’s were widespread. With an issue of far away appliances people would have to drive more, and thus accidents occur. According to a you tube clip “Radiant City: Suburban Landscape” there is three times more accidents than in inner cities. The reason being is because commute is approximately two hours and people who want to make it in time for work do unexpected things. With retail stores separate from homes car production increased so people can drive to where they desire. Car production is a leading cause of rise in carbon levels, since people need ways to transport. In other words it is due to three or so generations of racism that global warming has progressed.
