What people decide to do in response to economic failure always results in negative global impact. The essential idea that people have when finding solutions for any economic problem is beneficial to society. These “solutions” that the government and other people come up with are the problem. Humanity does not understand that no matter what we do, we add on to the earth’s destruction. This destruction can be easily seen through Aric McBay’s book “Peak Oil Survival: Preparation for Life after Gridcrash”. The author portrays to society that in our effort to fix one problem another one is created. According to McBay, oil consumption has led the world to oil depletion. This is seen as the most impactful resource that any nation must deal with. With people buying cars, oil percentages have decreased in the world and as a result of oil usage greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. The countries that are aware of global warming and its progress on the planet have tried to create new ways to deal with fossil fuel emissions in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, when these engineers created the hybrid car they did not realize that it would consume more energy than a regular SUV car. With a hybrid car fossil fuel consumption and exposure to the air would decrease but at the same time still increase global warming. Yes, hybrid cars lower fossil fuel exposure but it consumes more electrical energy and requires specialized and well educated engineers. This is just one example among others that McBay uses to show humanity that it is pointless to find solutions to any problem.
Meanwhile Aric McBay explains to society that the effort people put in to fix a problem is not exactly a solution, Laura Sewall talks about love and earth compassion. She believes that because love triumphs all people will willingly stop ignoring the planet and think of ways to help prevent the issue of global warming. This belief has been used as a way to show how people can change their view in social affairs. People with honor and experience with natural disasters can take the initiative to help the planet from continuous global heating. This aspect Laura portrays is that humanity can change what they do to the planet. These two aspects of literature can help people think and become aware of their surroundings.

Whiteness and World Without Humans
Monica August 3, 2009
Writing Seminar I
The issue of global warming has expanded and as a result experts have had conversations about it and written about the impact of our existence. In “The Deconstruction of Whiteness” and in The World without Us personification of buildings and the earth is expressed. In the conversation between Anthony and Carl, Anthony says “wanting to hear the voice of the earth, the notion that nature is crying out in pain…” (Anthony 265) Through his use of personification he shows us how the planet is being affected by our existence. We have created several corporations where the earth has made the earth feel pain of our lifestyle and from our consumption of toxic products. Similarly, the essay “The City without Us” states “Buildings groan as their innards expand and contract; joints between walls and rooflines separate.” This essay shows us that our existence has helped deteriorate the buildings in cities. This is according to our malfunction of not keeping water out of below ground areas. When water passes through the cement cracks form and a pathway for future water appears. These two works of literature help us understand the bad conduct we have with nature.
When we ignore nature we ignore the mishaps that we cause to our own creations. When the earth feels pain we feel pain, in this case the fact of cracks in buildings where in the end buildings collapse. Although both sources talk about the issue of global warming one takes the path about a world without us. This piece of information states that if we did not exist then the destruction we have caused would stop, yet it will take the planet a long period of time to re-adjust itself. The second source which is a conversation between two people tells us that if we don’t let the issue of racism end then our planet will harvest more disasters. With racism come inequality and no understanding, thus leading to the decline and extinction of the earth.

"The Story of Stuff" and "Narcissism

We don’t usually think about where manufactured products cause shortages in resources. We as Americans only feel the necessity to have the feeling of satisfaction. In American society one is looked down upon if one does not contribute to consumption. In “The Story of Stuff” a systematic blue print is used to show the process before and after consumption. Also the narrator tells us that this layout doesn’t reveal the “dirt” behind the issue of consumption. In her opinion, which I agree on, we are robbed of our identity as people. In both the video and in “The All-Consuming Self” it talks about our identification as consumers. We are not seen as mothers, daughters, friends, etc, but as people who buy products. This identification we have imposed on ourselves is the result of commercial and ad exposure. Through commercials and ads we are told that everything about us is “wrong”, and that we should go out to buy products that will make us right and “full”. According to Allen Kanner and Mary Gomes this feeling or “syndrome” is considered as narcissism.
You might think that narcissism refers to people who love them selves, but it also has
another meaning. It is a psychological idea that we have which tells us we are void inside. Void in a sense that we are not up to date in technological advances. Through us it is a feeling to strive for materialistic objects that we don’t have. Narcissistic people tend to work in order to have that satisfying feeling that holds their “false image”. The false image we have implanted in our minds is the result of people’s words that tell us we are not like them. We feel a lack of belonging and in some sense of love as well. The consequence of our idea when working to gain materialistic objects is less leisure time we spend with our loved ones. The routines we imposed on ourselves is of work, television time (when time is granted), and sleep. As a result of narcissism is the fact that we New Yorkers shop for unnecessary products while contributing to the big picture that surrounds us. The issue of good consumption is a leading factor of what is now known as global warming.

Numerous buildings below the crescent moon shine lively in the morning even though some people are sleeping. This image reminds me of New York City “The City that Never Sleeps” and the issue of global warming. The lights that illuminate the dawn contribute to carbon level in the atmosphere since electricity is being overly used. Electrical companies function incessantly since cities such as New York and Pittsburgh constantly shine and burn through out the morning. The picture taken by Ryan Southern Photography bears evidence that the world is truly heating up. All around the world there are places like Tokyo where light burns and the heat from all the electricity makes the situation of global warming worse. Is it not enough that the earth is naturally warming up since it is reacting to our fossil fuels? The contribution of light/ electricity helps the planet by making it come closer to D-Day.

Population growth is an expediting influence in the world especially in the United States. According to Leon Kolonklewicz, former alumni of British Columbia and marine biologist, population growth has sky rocketed due to increase of fertility rates in the 1970’s.[1] As a peace corp. participant he visited Honduras environment. Here he saw that a classroom held 50-70 bookless children[2]. Reason being for bookless children is because too much children means too much books to buy. In an economic struggle survival prevails over education. Evidence of economic struggle due to population growth is in the United States. Before 1970 the birth rate was approximately 2.1 but from 1970 to the present it overflowed[3]. The United States is known for its technological advances to accommodate large families. With more children comes the creation of more manufactured products and less money for parents. However, the populations of people in the United States contribute to the consumption of cars and other manufactured products that increase carbon levels. Kolonklewicz states that population and immigration brings a rise in consumption of technology. When the United States government allowed people to migrate to the country its population was a million larger. He also states that the U.S.A has increased 90 percent in population from 1970 to present time[4]. His belief is that global warming deals with population growth.
Leon uses the equation I=PAT to show how population influences the planet[5]. This equation stands for population times affluence times technology equals to world impact. Simply put population is the reason why global warming is rapidly increasing. With population carbon levels raise as a positive correlation. He references to Albert Gore in “An Inconvenient Truth” to exemplify the fact of carbon level increase. Similarly Mark Maslin, author of “Global Warming: A Very Short Introduction”, showed charts where carbon levels were increasing due to carbon level[6]. Like Leon I also believe and support the fact that population is a contribution of global warming. It may be of carbon levels like scientists have shown, but it depends on the number of people who use these items daily that increases carbon level.

Race and Global Warming
Racial issue leads to Global Warming and the end of the world.
Scientists always give scientific explanations why global warming is rising, but they seem to always leave out the issue of race. You might think “What does race have to do with Global Warming?” it’s simple: everything. You might be skeptical about the connection between race and global change like I was. If not for my teachers insight then I would have never considered race as the leading cause in increase of carbon levels. Back in the late 1940’s veterans from WWII were returning and wanted to live the “American Dream”, but the issue of race was critical at this time. African Americans were prohibited from living in areas where Caucasian people were. The reason for not allowing African Americans to live where they pleased was because veterans were racist. As a way to resolve the issue of whites not living next to Africans people started moving towards the suburbs. The great movement of caucasians to the suburbs made architects plan out a new model for people. Soldiers that came back from war used the G.I. bill to move out.During the time period of 1940-1950 racism was having a drastic impact on both whites and African Americans. In this time schools were no longer segregated, but it did not mean that racism ended. I see integrated schools as an attempt to drive away African Americans. White children at schools were beating up black children since they did not seem them as equals. Back then African Americans that grouped together were not considered gangs but as a unity to fight against those who stoned them. It was around this era that a Civil Rights movement embarked in Los Angeles. People who were participants of this movement were targeted and mistreated by the police. The news of massacre was headlined every week in the newspaper “The Eagle” it was through this propaganda that others saw the horrific actions that African Americans were facing. As a way to escape from this issue white people left in millions to suburban areas. This great migration is known as the “White Flight”.The “White Flight” made the government create homes for new residents. The creation of new homes made architects plan models for newcomers. Although the models for towns were created, convenience stores were built far apart. Wholesale stores, supermarkets, and office parking’s were widespread. With an issue of far away appliances people would have to drive more, and thus accidents occur. According to a you tube clip “Radiant City: Suburban Landscape” there is three times more accidents than in inner cities. The reason being is because commute is approximately two hours and people who want to make it in time for work do unexpected things. With retail stores separate from homes car production increased so people can drive to where they desire. Car production is a leading cause of rise in carbon levels, since people need ways to transport. In other words it is due to three or so generations of racism that global warming has progressed.

Two websites and my opiniion
It is incredible to see how the "The city that never sleeps" can just disappear in an instant. It is not something to be astonished by but scared of since we do not know when this can occur. Yes, scientists may predict when this might happen but nature has no boundaries and can take an earlier turn in distruction. In this case; the great flood of Manhattan. I just believe that although we do not do something that might impact the world now, we must deal with the fact that this world can come t an end at any time.

The information given about Pennsylvania shows us how others are taking action towards the affect that climate change is having. In my opinion I believe that although we are small and seem useless to others it is enough to say that we can help the world by our own means. Even though our nations are not coming to an agreement, we can help the planet we live on by just doing little things that can by our own means.

Your Viewpoint determines the future
According to Professor John Adams, from the University of College London, the actions we take are based on nature and our human ideals. These actions have four myths that describe us and the surrounding world. These two concepts are intertwined when the issue of global warming is at hand. It does matter on what the results are since the outcome is going to affect the world. The four types of nature are: benign nature, ephemeral nature, perverse/tolerant nature, and capricious nature. Along with this our human nature plays a role on our decisions. The four myths of human nature are: individual, egalitarian, hierarchist, and fatalist. Each myth comes together as a result of one’s ideals. For example, if you are a fatalist you are not going to change what “fate” has already decided and as a result you would not think to change the issue of global warming in the world. The basic idea that Professor John Adams wants to make is that the future is in our hands. We can easily decide to let the earth take its course or think of some way to stop the continuous rise in carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases. This is overly exemplified when he suggests placing George Bush in each of these categories and seeing the outcome result of his actions. He also informs us of the issue that there are some people who do not think that global warming is a problem. Adams shows us a combination of charts where the fatalists and egalitarians are either too drastic with global change or too lenient. As a result we do not know what is expected for the future since our decisions vary due to our human nature. Works Cited1. Professor John Adams ideals Your Viewpoint determines the future. Chapter 3.

Dear Benjamin,
Do you care about global warming? Do you agree on everything that people say, mainly your parents? If so, then it is my job to prove you wrong about global warming. Regardless of what you are being told, it is important that you know the scientific reasoning on why global warming is occurring before you take a stand. I’m not saying that your parent’s views are wrong, but that it is supported by other ideas with insufficient evidence. Maybe they weren’t exposed to the scientific explanation that state how we caused the increase of carbon levels, and as a result
we create global warming. Whatever the reason, this is your chance to broaden their understanding of global factors.
Ice-core scientists have proven that “carbon dioxide levels are in step…a central role…
an amplifier” (Maslin 60). Right here it shows how carbon dioxide is considered the main factor of global warming. This information has been gathered through Professor Shackleton’s research. His data shows that carbon levels have increased more than usual, and this can be supported by satellite data as well. At first, satellites gave inaccurate data but after adjustments they can trace back to the last 1,000 years. “Evidence suggests that natural climate forcings have been similar…this leaves one alternative- that greenhouse gases, with their known radioactive forcing, have already influenced global climate” (Maslin 65). Satellite data clearly proves that it is not nature, but our involvement with industrial manufacture. With the creation of industries, greenhouse gases and radioactive decay have polluted the planet. The increase in greenhouse gases has assisted global warming from spreading around the world. If this continues the planet we live in will no longer exist since the majority of below sea level countries are going to be under water, including Manhattan.
It is important to know that your position is supported by valid evidence. People, like Dr. Tim Ball, can easily say that global warming is a natural thing. However, arguments should have sufficient data that is well accepted by scientists. Dr. Ball stresses his view on global warming by stating that temperature has always been increasing even before man-made products were created. Unlike ice-core scientists, he does not provide evidence where this has been recorded. His claim has unfortunately been accepted by Canadians even though evidence saw not shown. Dr. Ball’s presentation is categorized as “junk science” since he does not say why he supports his position besides the fact of temperature. People do not know that oil companies, like the BC, are paying millions of dollars to silence the fact that they are causing an increase of greenhouse gases. Their purpose is to clear their path from obstacles that can prevent them from getting customers. So if you chose to take a stand, let your parents give you scientific data that proves the earth is causing global warming.
Sincerely,
Monica

The Scientific Explanation
Monica Cambi
The issue of seeking a solution to the sudden change in climate has not been emphasized until people actually started to feel or see it. This rapid shift on the earth has long been imposing a threat to our society since the beginning works of Roger Revelle and even before him. It is through Roger Revelles’ work that we actually started to see the planets’ geography. According to Albert Gore, previous presidential candidate for the 2000 election, it was Revelles’ work that astonished him with the issue that many people have ignored. The issue that is now such a threat that makes it seem that anything we come up with will not be enough. Al Gores professor has shown him the slight implications needed to fear climate change on our planet. Al Gore has since contributed his attention to finding an alternative by seeking aid through political means. He believed that by becoming president he can have the resource to enforce the dangers of ignorance. Up until the time he ran for president, Al Gore has made numerous hearings for this worldwide and yet neglected issue. The turn in his life that promoted his attention to this issue was his sons’ tragic accident. He questioned what the purpose to life was and how he can continue to live in a place where the ones he loved no longer existed. This pain created by this accident made him realize that in no time one can lose everything they had. He became overly entitled to seek a solution for the issue that climate created irreversible results. Before the time he ran for president, he visited various areas where he believed scientists can explain the doubt and confusion that he had about the current situation.
Places such as: Mount Kilimanjaro, the Himalayas, Glacier Park, Japan, Greenland, etc… were visual evidence where change was undergoing in the sea. Al Gore did not only see the skeptical results that were created by climate but the change in the ecosystem and nature. In 1957 Roger Revelle recorded data that measured carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It took only a few recorded data, and extensive amount of time to see that the exposure of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was rapidly increasing. The place that made scientists the most apprehensive was the Himalayas. It was in this region that drinkable water was available to people and due to the sudden climate change the glaciers were decreasing in size every day. It was only a matter of time that the earth was going to face an inevitable drought and afterwards a famine. During Al Gores presentation of climate change, he mentioned how before carbon dioxide did not surpass 300 parts per million, but now the amount rate of carbon exposure was almost half more than the estimated amount in 50 years. It has been recorded that through the past 14 years, the 10 hottest days were recently seen placing 2005 at the top. The issue of climate change is not something random, but the cause of global warming on earth. Global warming is a result of the burning of fossil fuels and industrial power plants that release smoke in the atmosphere. The smoke released thickens the ozone layer, thus trapping the natural sun rays that come to the planet. Naturally the sun comes or more like orbits around the earth, letting us receive the heat rays that is suppose to be in the planet to keep equilibrium.
What usually occurs is that the suns’ rays are both reflected by the earths’ surface and some are absorbed. However, with the frequent burning of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases the ozone layer has thickened trapping the majority of rays in, and causing the temperature to increase. If the rays can not leave then the temperature rises, thus melting the 1000 year old glaciers that were once a habitat for cold surrounding areas. The temperature that starts to melt the glaciers decreases the surface area that reflects the rays. This is predicted that in less than 50 years the polar caps that are usually reflecting sun rays will disappear and when they do the sea will continue to be exposed to radiation that will heat up the once polar area. With the increase in sea water the frequency of storms occurring will rise, and along with it the disaster that it will create. It is said that with warmer waters the velocity of the storms will become more violent and its affect will be greater. Along with the lowering of ice there is more movement of insects in various areas. This movement allows insects that are disease carriers to come into communities and affect it. This enables diseases to spread more frequently and widespread. The extinction of animals especially polar bears has rised and of other creatures as well. Global warming and climate change does not affect only animals and one part of the world, but the planet entirely. What are more disturbing are the images of people who have perished from hurricanes and other natural disasters. The issue that many seem to forget or ignore is the availability of money that can be used as a form of relocation for inhabitants where areas would be affected. The solution that Al Gore proposes is that with increase tax on petroleum the usage will rapidly decrease. This has been proposed since it worked with the issue of cigarettes.

The Climate of Man
Monica Cambi
Elizabeth Kolbert, journalist for “The New Yorker,” first introduces Shishmaref with enough background information to understand the articles’ geography and sudden change.
Shishmaref is the only village that is located in the island of the Seward Peninsula, and has a small population of 591 inhabitants in the village which is surrounded by the Chukchi Sea. In this area, the lifestyle of the Alaskan natives has created a gap between the ancient and modern lifestyles’. During her visit to this village she noticed a change in climate. Her tour guide was Tony Weyiouanna, transportation control man on the island. He explained to her that while men hunted they traveled by snowmobiles that would take them close to the shore of the sea. But as a result of climate disruption, men were not taking there snowmobiles and using boats as a new source of hunting. It was not only the issue of snowmobile usage but of the sudden change in the seas’ behavior. The frequency of storms occurring in the area was relatively high and disastrous that it caused residents to advocate for the villages’ relocation. It was not only going to be a tedious situation but a costly one as well, which amounted to a hundred and eighty million dollars. There was no caution taken towards the issue of global warming until the scientists from the National Academy of Sciences incepted a research of the area. Their results from their research resulted in notifying President Jimmy Carter of the sudden change.
Twenty five years later and people still did nothing to take care of the problem even though many books and information have been sent out about it to the world. The record that showed how the temperature was changing began in 1990; this year was recorded as the hottest year until the preceding year went up to the same temperature. Ever since then, the next preceding years temperatures have begun to rise. It was The American Geophysical Union that said that the problem was resolved. Since it’s a well known and respected scientific corporation not many thought of questioning anyone about it. More noticeable changes have occurred in Glacier National Park where the ice is predicted to entirely disappear by 2030. The beginnings of summertime temperatures in Alaska were becoming relatively high, especially in Fairbanks. It has been recorded that in this town of Alaska, the temperature was the highest yet. A result from the high temperatures’ was the growing of spruce trees. They grew in odd directions off the trench of ice that had begun to melt. These trees were called the “drunken trees” due to there erratic shape and location. Disastrous results such as peoples’ front yards of melting ice-wedges made people try to readjust their homes to the sudden physical changes occurring in town. This change was not only occurring in Alaska but in Antarctica too. Similarly like the town in Alaska, there was the danger of another village disappearing.
It is due to the cause of greenhouse gases and the release of methane in the oceans that have speed up the global change. According to Elizabeth Kolbert, people do not start to advocate for solutions until they can feel the affects of the situation themselves. As a result the situation has become overly worse and difficult to address, nevertheless resolve it entirely. Due to many scientist experimentation and recording of changes, it can be safe to say that by 2080 the Arctic would no longer exist. People are trying to bring back the equilibrium that the earth once had by decreasing the atmospheres exposure of greenhouse gases. The possibility of this occurring is not very high. Elizabeth tells us that by the time we realize the situation it might be too late to find a solution.

Introduction Summary
Global warming is a nationwide situation that has and will continue be a hazard to our society allowing more controversial views to arise on this issue and its causes. This does not only foreshadow a controversial dilemma when the time comes to agree on who to save from this disaster. The IPCC has not only taken an authoritative stand on stating what the future planet will appear but on the cause of the situation disregarding others perspective on this issue.
